Steve joined the Brunson team just over a year ago as an alignment specialist. Prior to coming to Brunson Steve worked in the sawmill industry and has more than 41 years of experience as a head saw filer. Steve began his career as a saw filer while still in high school and accepted his first head filing position at the age of 19. Over the years Steve has worked for numerous lumber companies in the Northwest portion of the United States. During his career Steve has trained and mentored numerous young saw filers who have gone on to become successful tradesmen.

Mario is North America Regional Manager at Woodtech Measurement Solutions. He has more than 20 years of experience in the forest product industry. Mario is Vice Chairman of the Timber Measurements Society. His work experience includes helping companies mainly in the U.S. and South America to enter in competitive markets providing expertise in strategic growth, business development and marketing programs through his company Angel Business and Consulting LLC. Mario worked as a consultant at The Beck Group, conducting competitive assessment (benchmarking) studies for many segments of the wood product industry and being involved in market research, production planning, financial analysis and timber supply and demand studies. Previously, Mario was Latin American specialist and later Program Manager at the World Forest Institute, an international program of the World Forestry Center in Portland, Ore.

Nick is a visionary in the field of emerging technologies to support lumber size control and predictive maintenance. He has worked in both Aviation Systems and Robotics but has focused the last 17 years on the wood products industry. Nick is the original designer of the SiCam products and currently the driving force behind the company’s vision.

Since joining The Beck Group in 2003, Bryan has been involved in a wide variety of consulting projects including industry benchmarking studies, planning projects and feasibility studies, timber valuation system development, and organizing and overseeing numerous in-mill log tests. His recent work includes overseeing industry training workshops, acquisition due diligence projects, facility appraisal and valuation projects, timber and biomass supply/demand studies, and business plan development assistance. Prior to joining The Beck Group, Bryan’s experience included roles at softwood lumber mills in Oregon as well as home construction and custom cabinetry.

A Physics Engineer, Jean is characterized by his keen interest for innovative technologies used in the forest industry. The key to success for VAB Solutions Inc. is the importance of R&D with more than $3.5 million invested.

Norm has 30+ years of industry experience and is a second generation filer by training. Norm began his career as a filer and has filed in both the Southern and Western U.S. Subsequent to his filing experience, Norm owned/managed cutting tool service centers, has been a saw salesman and product manager. Currently Norm is the Western USA Sales Manager and Circle Saw Technical & Design Specialist for Simonds International.

Terry instituted the first formal Lumber Quality and Process Control training programs for the lumber manufacturing industry in 1976. He founded the Lumber Quality Institute in 1982 and he continues to offer training programs for sawmill industry personnel throughout North America and internationally. Terry was the Extension Wood Processing Specialist in the Wood Science and Engineering Dept. at Oregon State University. He is Professor Emeritus in the Wood Science and Engineering Dept.

From Austria, Michael has a degree in mechanical engineering and has more than 15 years of experience in design engineering and project engineering for the wood processing industry. At present he is a senior project engineer and sales manager for the North American market at Springer.

Ofer is the Director of Operations at Lucidyne Technologies, Inc.
He has been developing defect detection software at Lucidyne since 1999. He was appointed director of Business Development in 2012 and was recently promoted to Director of Operations. Ofer received his Ph.D. in Geosciences from Oregon State University and his prior experience is in image processing applications for mapping and remote sensing. Ofer led the team developing the Gradescan Strength Grading Module with Weyerhaeuser R&D and is a co-inventor of True-Q, the queue control system based on automatic recognition of images.

Robert has more than 17 years of experience in Performance Improvement consulting and management in a variety of industries. As a consultant, he has led more than 40 multi-month consulting engagements, resulting in more than $125 million in sustainable financial impacts for his clients. Robert also has experience managing single mill and multi mill operations, as Plant Manager and Vice President of Manufacturing for a privately owned company in Oregon. Robert joined Pöyry in 2011 and leads the Operational Excellence practice for Pöyry N.A. Robert’s expertise is in performance management, leadership development and executive coaching.

Norvin studied Robotics & Automation in British Columbia. He is a software specialist, has developed different machine vision and optimization systems for high speed manufacturing processes. Norvin has implemented many such systems in sawmills. He recently became CTO of MiCROTEC North America.

Gale has more than 40 years of experience in the sawmill industry. He worked as an operations manager for more than 20 years at prestigious companies such as Weyerhaeuser, Woodcraft/Georgia Kraft, Hammermill Paper and ITT Rayonier. With 18 successful years working in OEM sales of sawmill equipment (USNR/CSMI, Forano Eastern), Gale joined Autolog in 2001 as a sawmill process control and optimization systems sales representative, introducing systems that have improved efficiency and productivity. As a representative and over the length of his career, Gale has a remarkable and consistent track record for developing strong relationships leading to top performance.

Peter has more than 25 years of experience developing hydraulic, pneumatic and vision systems for industrial applications. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1975 with a BSEE and served in the U.S. Navy until 1980. He became president of Delta Computer Systems, Inc. in 1992. In addition to leading Delta’s engineering and R&D programs, his articles are published in industry publications such as Hydraulics and Pneumatics, Machine Design. He has also presented technical papers for IFPE, NFPA, FPDA and various technical conferences.

Joey was exposed to the sawmill industry through a family business. He developed a stronger interest in the industry during college, particularly in the applications of laser scanning in sawmills. As an electrical engineer, Joey knew he could build a better laser scanner to improve recovery in many different aspects of sawmill operations. With that vision in mind, Joey founded JoeScan in 1999. Since introducing the first JS-20 scan head to the market in 2002, Joey has continued to make scanning simpler and more reliable. Joey regularly speaks at industry events, and he is committed to developing and manufacturing products that meet the demands of the forest products industry.

Norbert is a Graduate Engineer for Woodworking Technology from the University of Applied Sciences in Rosenheim Bavaria. Since 1977 he has been employed at Linck HVT in Oberkirch Germany, working as sales engineer worldwide.

Larry has worked for Comact since 1997. He is an Electrical Technician by trade working on PLCs, scanners, computers and all types of electronic equipment related to the production of lumber. Larry worked 10 years in sawmills for Tembec, in charge of the electrical department and responsible for the automation and optimization of two major mills. He has held different positions within Comact, starting as PLC Programmer, Project Manager and Operation Manager of the optimization division. He led the team of experts that developed and installed the first lumber grading systems based on vision scanning: the GradExpert. Through the years, he has been directly involved in sales mainly covering North America and Scandinavian markets as a sales representative. Since 2011 he has been Capital Sales Manager for Comact USA.

Alex has a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a master’s degree in Management Science from the University of British Columbia. He has worked in the lumber industry since 1996 as part of HALCO Software Systems Ltd., where he is currently a senior analyst and principal. HALCO provides operations simulation and optimization software and related consulting services, and is well known for their SAWSIM Sawmill Simulation Program. Alex’s expertise is in operations-wide optimization, considering the entire supply chain from stump to finished product. In recent years, his work has focused on single-operation optimization, including the WSO Production Planning Optimization System.

Christopher is Scanner Specialist with Lucidyne Technologies Inc. Chris joined Lucidyne in December 2012 and is one of the key contacts for customers in optimizing the performance of their GradeScan system. He worked in lumber mills for seven years, three years as a utility worker and four years as machine operator. Chris has a strong electronic hardware background, and holds an associate of applied science degree as an Electronic Engineering Technician from Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore. As an expert in using GradeScan’s optimizer and QC tools, Chris helps customers exploit GradeScan to its fullest potential.

Joe has more than 40 years of experience in the troubleshooting of electrical, electronic and mechanical systems. Joe joined USNR after six years in the US Navy as an Electronics Technician. He started with USNR in September 1979. Joe has worked in the manufacturing and service departments. While in the Service Dept. he specialized in edgers, gangs, bandmills, planers and chipper systems. He has been instrumental in the development of formulas used for designing the proper application of saws and chippers. Joe assembled and designed the alignment methods for the first Multi-Line Scanner (measures the board to be cut) for USNR. Alignments and system diagnostics has become his main focus for service trips around the world. Joe works with the service and engineering departments in developing product improvements that reduce maintenance and downtime.

Andrew has more than 14 years experience as a performance improvement manager and consultant in the wood products industry. He is the Director at Trajectre, a consulting firm specializing in the implementation of continuous improvement management systems. His expertise includes the development of optimization strategies and quality management systems for sawmills, kilns and planer mills. For nine years, Andrew managed analysis and performance improvement projects for Perforex and Pröyry Management Consulting in wood product facilities across the Southeast, Pacific Northwest, and Canada. As the Lumber Operations Excellence Manager at Georgia-Pacific, he oversaw the implementation of quality control programs at 12 facilities across the United States. He was also a guest presenter at the 2011 Lumber Quality Institute workshops.

A newcomer to Brunson, Thomas leads the Technical Services Business Unit. Prior to joining Brunson, Thomas’ civilian career included working as a retread plant manager for Tire Centers (a Michelin subsidiary) in San Antonio, banking entrepreneur in San Francisco, and Chief Operating Officer of Mid-Atlantic Maritime Academy in Virginia Beach. Additionally, Thomas served 10 years in the United States Navy as a surface warfare officer with deployments to South America, Southern Europe, the Middle East, Afghanistan and Japan. Thomas has an MBA from the Naval Postgraduate School and is a 1997 graduate of the United States Naval Academy (B.S. Aerospace Engineering – Astro track).

Brad has a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia. He has worked with the lumber industry since 1984, first as a mechanical design engineer, and since 1988 as a principal with HALCO Software Systems Ltd. HALCO provides operations simulation and optimization software and related consulting services, and is well known for its SAWSIM Sawmill Simulation Program. Brad is recognized as an expert in sawmill optimization system parameter tuning and debugging. In recent years, his work has focused on optimization modeling, including the WSO Production Planning Optimization System.
